Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees..........

Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?
Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees
By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross
Published: 15 April 2007

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.

The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.

The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast.

CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned.

Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK."

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world's crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left".No one knows why it is happening. Theories involving mites, pesticides, global warming and GM crops have been proposed, but all have drawbacks.

German research has long shown that bees' behaviour changes near power lines.

Now a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby. Dr Jochen Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I am convinced the possibility is real."

The case against handsets

Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such as cancer, take decades to show up.

Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.

Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a form of RSI from constant texting.

Professor Sir William Stewart, who has headed two official inquiries, warned that children under eight should not use mobiles and made a series of safety recommendations, largely ignored by ministers.

saw this earlier today tiger, frightening stuff, though it is curious that the phenomena started in the USA, when in fact wide-spread mobile phone use took hold in Europe a couple of years before hitting these shores; just an observation

Tigerbolt

My buddy swears that cell phone waves are also causing mental imbalances in human beings in extreme cases and headaches in mild cases. He said it does not affect everyone the same but he claims when he approaches a cell tower on the highway it really bothers him.

We are screwed without bees.

Bee's are finally getting pissed that we been ripping them off....or, it could be the the impending pole shift
(in cycles) are screwing with their sense of direction, and they bee lost & spaced.(Heard they hate ice ages too)

But most likely, it's GW's fault. He is to blame for everything wrong, after all....

Anyway, in the meantime, hummingbirds are getting real FAT. Time for other insects to take up the slack

i don't think the bee disappearance is GWB fault, i mean that would be absurd; however, i have noticed that since he stole the big house, dumb people do seem to be more vocal and more prevalent, and i'm pretty certain he spawned that ill side effect of his unpresidency; just an observation of course

Yes, yes indeed, the far left has become more vocal, and prevalent since GWB won the Presidential election twice.

Speaking of bees, I wonder what it would be like to have a week, or a month of RF free environment. In my lifetime, I'll be 60 in June, there has never been such a day.

Imagine if ALL radio waves/transmissions of ANY sort were stopped for 1 day (like 300 yrs ago) I mean right now, zillions of them waves are bombarding us 24/7. And I include everything, even light bulbs and all things electrical -would our minds & bodies notice?

It IS pretty ridiculous how much stuff GWB gets blamed for. I mean, the ONLY things I can think of are:

Invading another country based on completely false pretenses resultng in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and global hatred for the U.S. on an unprecedented scale...

...approval of torture and secret torture sites in foreign nations and the holding of hundreds of people in prison detention camps without charging them with any crime whatsoever...

...taking a national surplus and turning it into the largest deficit, in the trillions and still counting, in the nation's history, with $6 Billion A MONTH going into a complete failure of a war that has no exit strategy...

...cutting veterans benefits EVERY YEAR he's been in office and the disgraceful failure to pay attention to the roach and rat infested Walter Reed Army medical hospital which houses many of the same veterans he purports to "care" so much about...

...record numbers of "signing statements" that evoke shady "executive privilege" to make a runaround against any possible override of a veto, allowing for, among other things the illegal wiretapping of U.S. citizens...

...making his one and only veto to date a slap-down of stem cell research on embryos that would be destroyed anyway, and could potentially provide for scientific breakthroughs on some of the worst diseases plaguing living, walking, breathing human beings...

...a complete gutting of the Clean Air Act, and orderng of the EPA to claim it does not have the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions...

...an almost daily butchering of the English language that includes such gems as "The children is our future".

I mean, that's all I can think of, really, so yeah--those lefties sure are a bunch of crybabies!

[Not completely, they broke all the UN resolutions and that evil scumbag Sadam, is ungratefully DEAD and the "Globe" IS full of evil jealous scumbags that hate us and our true freedoms]

...approval of torture and secret torture sites in foreign nations and the holding of hundreds of people in prison detention camps without charging them with any crime whatsoever... [define our "torture" vs Saddams]

...taking a national surplus and turning it into the largest deficit, in the trillions and still counting, in the nation's history, with $6 Billion A MONTH going into a complete failure of a war that has no exit strategy...
[I agree...except the exit strategy should include overwhelming victory]

...cutting veterans benefits EVERY YEAR he's been in office and the disgraceful failure to pay attention to the roach and rat infested Walter Reed Army medical hospital which houses many of the same veterans he purports to "care" so much about...

[I say wiretap the hell out of the hate-america type "citizens"]

...making his one and only veto to date a slap-down of stem cell research on embryos that would be destroyed anyway, and could potentially provide for scientific breakthroughs on some of the worst diseases plaguing living, walking, breathing human beings...
[to hell with Big Brother funding it -why don't YOU fund it -in the private sector]

...a complete gutting of the Clean Air Act, and orderng of the EPA to claim it does not have the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions...
[Al Gore is a big hipocrite-like most politicians, liar and political hack]

[?...anyway, english is the national language-see attached file]

Well, at least you took on my points one by one, rather than issuing a non-sensical right-wing rant. I respect that, even if I disagree with much of what you said:

i.e. If you think it's OK to invade other countries just b/c they're run by evil scums like Saddam (and yeah, he WAS scum, no doubt...then why aren't we invading North Korea, Sudan, China, half of Africa, and Cuba for that matter?)

The situation at Walter Reed is not "rhetoric"....you cannot say you care about veterans on the one hand and then cut their benefits ever year, ask them to go and fight and die for your illegal war, and then let them live like bums on skid row whe they get home.

You talk a lot about Big Brother--when it suits YOUR political view. I don't want a Big Brother goverment either, and just b/c you assume that every illegal wire tap is automatically on a "terrorist scum" doesn't make it so. Illegal wiretapping of US citizens is ust that--illegal. It is common practice in the countries you purport to hate--like the old soviet Russia and East Germany, to spy on their own citizens.

The idiots that brought us this war laughed at the general who said we would need 300,000 troops to d the job right. Then they fired him. Turns out he was right. You want total victory? That's the cost. And btw, it would necessitate a draft at this point. Would you wllingly send your kids over there to fight for a bunch of people who don't want you there to begin with and have absolutely no history or sense of what Democracy is? Not me. I don't think the life of ONE US soldier is worth dyng over for the Iraqis. They had a dictator for a leader? Hey, that sucks for them. Half the world has that situation, and we're not out saving them. Hmmmmm, wonder why? Oh, let me take a guess: Those other countries aren't sittng on a butt-pile if oil.

Al Gore is an ass. You assume I like him b/c you have me labelled as a liberal lefty so you have me all figured out. Al Gore and Gore alone is responsble for losing the election in 2000. If he had simply won his home state of TN. (and even the most pathetic candidates in history, from Dukakis to Mondale were able to win their home states) then no one would have been crying about Florida b/c it wold not have mattered. The C02 issue is actually a state's right issue--i.e. states like VT and CA want the right to set their own emissions standards and they shold have that right but the spineless EPA, under GW's orders, snivels that it can't regulate Co2 and thus give states the authority--again, if you really are against "Big Brother", then why are you siding so often with what under GW has become one of the worst examples of Big Brother Govt. in the history of the world?

The torture issue has nothing to do with Saddam....it is simply un-American to torture people and especially to hold them w/out charges fr years. AGAIN, that is the allmark of Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany, and so many of those totalitarian nations yo say you hate (and should).

America is the greatest country in the history of civilization. Period. I don't "hate America" as you probably think I do. I hate an incompetent, arrogant administration that stomps all over the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and sheer human decency to solidify its hold on its own sense of power and hubris. That is NOT what America is supposed to be about.

I welcome these types of debates, btw, b/c I also believe in that most American of values--FREE SPEECH...so if you want to have a thoughtful exchange of ideas, I truly respect that...but when I get pissy little responses from the likes of Edsel who just want to have their point of view accepted without backing it up, and belittling others without engaging in the difficult job of listening to another's viewpoint, I come ou swinging.

Clearly, the fact that you and I love the Grateful Dead means we can't really be all that different.

and I may not agree with what you say, but as a proud member of the American left, I will always defend your right to say it.

#1 The retard did not steal the election, we voted for him twice over the democrat candidate. Think about that for a moment... no really.

#3 Radioation of various frequencies has been bombarding us for billions of years. Most plants and animals need various forms for survival (heat, light, etc).

#4 George Bush is directly responsible for solar flares, islamic extremism, aquatic mammal sonar pollution and Martian global warming.

#5 Global warming may lower atlantic hurricane activity with upper level wind sheer. Please keep your vehicles running in your driveway and sleep with all the lights on so our homeowner's insurance premiums go down some more. There plenty of zoo's for the polar bears and the rest of the world's agricultural and environmental losses will benefit us in the long run.

I think that the Taliban are responsible. Or maybe Karl Rove & "W" are trying to justify another war on someone, and THEY killed all the bees.

Ignore the jest---this IS a SERIOUS problem. This situation just goes to show that EVERYTHING is connected & if you remove or disable just part of the chain, it all collapses.
